Leather Care

Our leather products are built to last, but do require occasional care to keep them in beautiful shape continuously.

For the most uses, it's pretty easy. Pick up a tube of leather conditioner, and apply it once every 1-3 months, depending on how often you use the product. If you feel like using additional products, Lincoln's Shoe Wax Polish, Meltonion Cream Polish (clear), or Venetian Cream, are all excellent choices as well, depending on what sort of finish you'd like to achieve.

Incidentally, the leather conditioner we sell, as well as the previously listed products, are also excellent to use on your shoes and any other leather products you own.

Patina Notes

All leather products will develop a unique patina over time. This is most obvious in the natural, undyed leathers, and less evident the darker base color. Most people choose natural leather so that they can get it to take on the color of their lives - so that the dye becomes their story, and day to day experiences, and that the product then is very much uniquely their's.

Patinas take months to create, and while there is no right or wrong way to get one, since it's simply a reflection of the life the product leads, there are a few things worth keeping in mind:

1) Whatever you're wearing will impart color onto the leather. Meaning, if you use it in blue jeans, expect them to become blue and black with time. If you use it in khakis and similar, expect that the color imparted will be a richer brown tone.

2) Sweat matters. It has some effect on the ultimate color the leather takes on, but most directly transfers the dye from your clothing directly onto the leather a lot more easily than when completely dry.

3) Regular maintenance keeps everything in good shape. When tanned, leather is stuffed with oils and waxes that help give it its unique characteristics, and to occasional application of a good leather conditioner keeps it soft, supple, and strong. A well cared for leather product from Muyshondt will last multiple generations.
